Every year around June, something shifts in North Bay. The patios start filling up, kids suddenly live in swimsuits, and everyone collectively decides that winter never happened.

And honestly? Summer here is one of the many reasons people fall in love with living in North Bay.

As someone raising my family here, I’ve realized the best parts of summer aren’t always the huge attractions (though they are fun too!) — it’s the small everyday moments right in our community that really stand out. Ice cream after the beach. Running into friends at the waterfront. Splash pads on hot days. Last-minute trips to the farmers’ market. Kids exhausted and sandy by bedtime.

If you’re looking for things to do in North Bay this summer, here are some of my local favourites that make this city feel special.

Waterfront Visits Just Hit Different

The waterfront is the heart of North Bay in the summer. Even if you don’t have a plan, heading down there somehow turns into a whole event.

One of my favourite things is grabbing a tea or ice cream and walking along the water while the kids play nearby. There’s almost always something happening — music, events, volleyball, families biking, or people just sitting watching the evening sunset over the lake.

The City’s Summer Concert Series is back this year at the Kiwanis Bandshell with free live music running throughout the summer on Wednesday evenings. Bring lawn chairs, snacks, and let the kids dance around while you relax for a minute.

And if you have younger kids, you absolutely have to do the train and carousel at least once every summer.

Older kids or a day/evening without kids? Check out the Chief Commanda and hop on a jaw dropping Callander Bay Sunset Cruise!

Farmers’ Market Mornings

Summer Saturdays in North Bay just feel slower in the best way.

The farmers’ market downtown is one of those things locals sometimes take for granted, but it’s truly such a vibe in the summer. Fresh produce, flowers, baking, local honey, live music — and you always run into someone you know.

I fully recommend turning it into a whole morning:

  • Coffee first
  • Walk the market
  • Waterfront stroll
  • Maybe a beach stop if the weather’s good

That’s peak North Bay summer!

Beach Days Become Your Entire Personality

If you live here long enough, you start measuring summer by “good beach days.”

Whether your family loves:

  • Marathon Beach
  • Olmsted Beach
  • The Cove Beach

Or any of our other local hidden gems

…there’s something really special about having this kind of access to so many bodies of water right in the city.

Some of my favourite summer memories with my girls are just random days or evenings at the beach with snacks packed in a cooler bag.

Summer Festivals & Community Events

One thing North Bay does really well in the summer is community events. There’s usually something happening almost every weekend.

A few events happening this summer include:

  • The Summer Concert Series
  • Local waterfront festivals
  • Bay Block Party
  • The Midway
  • Pow-wows and cultural celebrations
  • Food festivals and ribfests
  • Artisan markets and other family events

The Maamwi Kindaaswin Pow-Wow at Lee Park is especially worth checking out — the music, dancing, food, and local vendors make it such a meaningful community event every summer.

And if you want to see how North Bay can shut down Main Street and party, don’t miss the Bay Block Party!

The Thing About North Bay Summers…

I think what makes summers here so special isn’t one single attraction.

It’s the lifestyle.

It’s kids riding bikes around the neighbourhood. Lemonade stands. Last-minute beach trips. Knowing you can get almost anywhere in 15 minutes. Seeing familiar faces everywhere you go.

And as much as people sometimes joke that “there’s nothing to do in North Bay,” I honestly think the magic here is that summer feels simpler. Slower. More connected.

As a REALTOR®, I talk to a lot of people moving here from bigger cities, and one of the first things they notice is exactly that.

Life just feels a little more manageable here.

And in the summer especially, it’s hard not to fall in love with it.
